THE ROLE OF THE BUNKER IN GOLF COURSE DESIGN  4-4-2008
Improving Bunkers – Renovation, Restoration or Redesign? From the early days of golf, the sand bunker has been one of the defining hazards which the golfer has had to avoid in order to reach the green. On the early links courses the first bunkers emerged in areas of exposed sand to form an interesting and penalizing hazard. The severity of the bunker affected the playability of the ball – giving the bunker a significant function and role in the strategy of the golf hole. The early links bunkers, as we see them on the British links, were later on formalized and given a stabilising, revetted edge. Since the end of the 1800s many types of bunkers have emerged – from small sand traps to gigantic ‘American’ style bunkers. » read more
PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS USED IN TURFGRASS MANAGEMENT  3-4-2008
Classification and user guide for PGR’s. Plant growth regulators (PGR’s) are an organic compound, natural or synthetic, that when present or applied in small amounts results in a change in plant growth and development. They are increasingly being used on golf courses to suppress seedheads and vegative growth of desirable turfgrasses, enhance turfgrass quality and manage Poa annua growth and development. Depending upon the turfgrass and situa¬tion, PGR’s may reduce mowing costs, prevent scalping, increase turf density and decrease the need to mow steep slopes. PGR’s were initially developed to slow turf growth and suppress seedheads in low maintenance areas such as highway roadsides, airports and golf course rou¬ghs. Their use on high-quality turf was limited because of potential phytotoxicity, unpredictable turf response and differences in activity on cool- and warm-season turf. » read more
